In 2019, I decided to put together a 6-month natural hair health and growth challenge. I was experiencing set back after set back and I knew it was time for a change.
My main goals were:
- Nurture my natural hair back to health.
- Grow my hair back to waist length.
- Healthy body (vitamin, water, exercise)
I can’t say the entire 6 month was smooth sailing, but thankfully, by the end of the challenge, I’d accomplish my goals.
After sharing my results on Instagram, many of you have shared that you’d also like to take on a 6 month hair health and growth challenge.
Here are the basic rules for our 2020 Health and Growth Challenge:
- Little to no (added) oils
- Little to no (added) butters
- Deep Condition, only when needed
- Wash hair every 1-2 weeks (preferably weekly)
- Preferably no weave (extensions or wigs)
- Daily supplements /vitamins intake
- Trim/dust ends as needed (typically done every 3-4 months)
- Exercise at lease 3x a week
- Daily water intake
- To share your starting point, progress, and results, use the hashtag #CoachShaunie2020
Keep your regimen as simple as 1,2,3.
- Shampoo
- Conditioner
- 1-2 Styling products
To start, share a photo or short video showing your current health and length. Share what’s been going on with your hair and your expected goal after 6 months. Remember to use #CoachShaunie2020 when sharing on Instagram. Tag @coachshaunie if sharing on IG Stories.

Are braids a no go as well or is it only weaves and wigs
Try to stay away from anything other than your actual hair, as much as possible.
What are added oils and added butters and should the supplements be protein?
Try to avoid adding oils to your hair. Ex: Coconut oil, Olive oil, Castor oil, etc. Also try to avoid adding butters such as shea butter. I know some people use the raw butter on their hair very often. You supplements are your usual daily vitamins and whatever other health supplements you may be taking, currently.

I’d like to know what is the reason for not using oils while I use oils for the health and growth of my hair.
Oils make it harder for water to enter your hair strands. And water is what our hair needs the most of.
How then do we retain moisture without oil or butter?
The hydration actually comes from shampooing and conditioning. Then to top it off, use a great styling product that helps with hydration. I really like the styling products by Nurture Hair Care. They were created to do just that. 🙂
