You’ve been asking for answers. “Why is my natural hair so DRY?”
I posted a poll on my Instagram Stories, asking who’s struggling with dry hair and to my surprise, 84% of the voters said they were. I wish I could come over everyone’s house and give you some hands-on help, but since that’s not possible, I decided to put together a list of  9 things that could possibly be causing your hair to be dry. Simply read and adjust your regimen, if needed.
Shampooing more than necessary
Shampooing once on wash day should be enough. Apply shampoo to your scalp and massage. Rinse with warm water before and after to help wash away all the build up on your scalp and strands.
(Harsh) Shampoos
As some of you may know, I basically vowed to never use shampoo in my hair again. That was until I discovered one recently that is simply AMAZING. It leaves my hair so soft. Never knew a shampoo could make my hair feel so moisturized.
You could also use a Cleansing Conditioner or CoWash, if you prefer.
➡️Product Recommendation: TRESemme Bontanique Damage Recovery Shampoo
Protein treatments or protein(ish) treatments
I personally don’t do protein treatments anymore and see no need for it in MY regimen.
Coconut oil (used to seal in moisture)
For some, coconut oil makes the hair feel like a bad protein treatment. This happens to be the case with my hair. If you find that you have to stay away from protein treatments, coconut oil might not be the best oil to use on your hair to “seal” in moisture. Try using Extra Virgin Olive Oil, if you prefer light oils. Try Avocado oil if you prefer medium thick oils. Try Jamaican Black Castor Oil if your hair loves THICK oils, butters, and creams.
BEFORE your toss that coconut oil though, remember that you can use it in other ways. My favorite cheap and simple deep conditioning treatment (or pre-poo treatment) is a cheap conditioner and coconut oil. Let it sit in your hair for 15-45 minutes and simply rinse and follow up with your normal wash day routine.
Wearing your hair out often (Ex: Afros, Twist Outs, Braid Outs, ect.)
As cute as these styles are, you have to pay attention to what your hair is telling you. You might have to moisturize more in the week if you know you will be wearing your hair out. Don’t just leave it dried out until the next time you wash it.
Trying to moisturize your hair with oil
Oil does NOT moisturize your hair. Water is the BEST moisturizer for our kinky curly hair. You use oil to SEAL in the moisture.
Not drinking enough water
I’ve been through many periods, in the past, of hardly drinking water and never “struggled” with dry hair though, to be completely honest. But water is very important for our body though. So don’t do what I did.
Not doing deep conditioning treatments when needed.
If your hair is severely dry, I recommend doing a deep treatment every week.
Excessive heat being used on hair that is already struggling to retain moisture.
Try air drying your hair as much as you can. Give your hair a break from the blow dryer and flat iron if you find that your hair is really dry and breaking off.
